Spain vs Czech Republic Preview

Spain are a reasonably distant 5/1 to claim victory in the overall tournament but they should get off to a winning start against a limited Czech Republic side; according to FIFA Spain are the world’s sixth best team and while recent friendly results may not bear that out, they have a team well capable of scoring more than one goal here. The Czech Republic can look back on a friendly win against Russia in the run up to the tournament but it’s been a bit patchy otherwise – expect them to concede goals.

Form All Games Last 5  Average Goals Scored  Average Goals Conceded
Spain  LWWDD 2.3 0.3
Czech Rep.  LWWDL 1.9 1.4

Picks?

We’re going for Spanish players from any position with the emphasis on strikers and defenders. No-one from the opposition.

Republic of Ireland vs Sweden Preview

This is a match which is a bit tricky to predict and the bookies seem to agree but it’s also a match both sides need to win if they are to have a chance of progressing in this competition. For us it’s the form of Zlatan Ibrahimovic which will make the difference between these sides – the Irish generally concede and Ibrahimovic scored 11 goals in the qualifying campaign.

Form All Games Last 5  Average Goals Scored  Average Goals Conceded
Rep. Ireland  LDDWW 1.83 0.67
Sweden  WDDLW 1.58 1

Picks?

Go for Zlatan if you can afford him but also consider midfielders and defenders from Sweden if you need to fill spaces.

Belgium vs Italy Preview

This looks like an absolutely cracking match and probably the highest profile game so far; Belgium, FIFA’s 2nd best team, are narrow favourites for the victory but we all know how hard it is to score against the Italians, let alone beat them. The Belgian qualifying campaign saw seven wins and one defeat in ten games with a hatful of goals scored but Italy will note that a well-drilled Wales team won and drew against the Belgians in their two outings.

Form All Games Last 5  Average Goals Scored  Average Goals Conceded
Belgium  WDWLW 2.4 0.5
Italy  WWLDD 1.6 0.7

Picks?

We’re inclined towards the score draw here and both teams would probably settle for 1-1 when the dust settles. Go for midfielders from both teams but defenders are an option also.
