Newcastle United vs Sunderland

The Tyne-Wear derby will be more tense than usual this at St James Park on Sunday as both teams are in serious relegation trouble; Newcastle are second from bottom, one point behind Sunderland who are just hovering above the drop zone. The visitors are in slightly better recent form but this could be a desperate and unpredictable affair. Sunderland have won the last six matches between these teams but don’t let that skew your thinking – the home team are favourites for the win.

Picks?

Jermain Defoe has proved good value in recent weeks for Sunderland but we think this could be a drab and goalless affair so Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt and Newcastle’s Daryl Janmaat and Fabricio Coloccini could be cheap options.

League Form Last 5  Average Goals Scored  Average Goals Conceded
Newcastle  LLLLW  1.50  1.50
Sunderland  DDLWD  1.20  2.53

Southampton vs Liverpool

Liverpool have found some form, winning the last three games and must now make the tricky trip to Southampton who are one place above them in the Premier League table, although the Reds have two games in hand. Liverpool have scored 11 goals in the last three games and their attack should be a handful for the Saints defence. For their part Southampton concede very few points at home but we foresee a narrow away win.

League Form Last 5  Average Goals Scored  Average Goals Conceded
Southampton  WDLLW  1.67  1.07
Liverpool  WWWDL  1.60  1.33

Picks? Liverpool’s Paolo Coutinho has ben a consistent scorer from midfield with 5 goals and 5 assists but James Milner and Adam Lallana are solid recommendations also. In the Saints’ midfield, Dusan Tadic is in good scoring form but may have his work cut out to grab too may oppportunities on Sunday.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

This is a massive game on Sunday afternoon with both Manchester teams underperforming in different ways recently; City’s title bid is over while United still need to find any decent form under Louis van Gaal. City are strong favourites with the bookies on Sunday and rightly so although their recent form is certainly patchy. We do know that City score loads of goals at home and should dominate possession on Sunday so we are looking at attacking players from the home team.

League Form Last 5  Average Goals Scored  Average Goals Conceded
Manchester City  DWLLL  2.6  1.50
Manchester United  LWWLD  1.13  1.33

Picks? United’s David de Gea may be a left-field choice in goal but it’s a risk which will pay off only if makes lots of saves to make up for any goals conceded. Otherwise concentrate on City midfielders and strikers such as Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Bournemouth

This is an ideal opportunity for Spurs to maintain contact with Leicester City at the top of the league and if Leicester win on Saturday, it’s a must-win. Both teams are on good form but Spurs are strong at home, conceding less than one goal per game on average. The home side should dominate possession and we would be happy to pick players from Spurs in any position.

League Form Last 5  Average Goals Scored  Average Goals Conceded
Spurs  WDLWW  1.80  0.80
Bournemouth  WWWDL  1.20  1.60

Picks? Harry Kane is expensive but a guaranteed points gatherer; also look at Cristian Eriksen& Dele Alli in midfield and Toby Alderweireld in defence (3 goals and 2 assists this season). For the visitors, defender Charlie Daniels takes the set pieces.
