The Champions League returns with the New Year and on Wednesday evening we have two first leg matches, both of which look interesting but neither feature English teams:

  • KAA Gent vs VfL Wolfsberg
  • Roma vs Real Madrid

Here’s Our Pick:

Goalkeeper Keylon Navas Real Madrid £9.0m
Defender Lasse Nielsen KAA Gent £6.7m
Defender Stefan Mitrovic KAA Gent £6.4m
Defender Naldo VfL Wolfsberg £8.3m
Midfielder Isco Real Madrid £9.4m
Midfielder Renato Neto KAA Gent £5.9m
Midfielder Julian Draxler VfL Wolfsberg £7.9m
Midfielder Miralem Pjanic Roma £7.4m
Midfielder Daniele de Rossi Roma £7.4m
Forward Edin Dzeko Roma £6.9m
Forward Ronaldo Real Madrid £19.8m

Roma host Real Madrid on Tuesday and this is the toughest possible start for the Italians; Real blitzed their league campaign, drawing just once, scoring 19 and conceding just 3 and will be confident of an away win in this first leg.

KAA Gent vs VfL Wolfsberg looks to be a closer affair, the Germans just about winning Group A while Gent made it through in second place in a tough group.

We’ve gone for Keylon Navas from Real Madrid in goal but we’re relying more on Gent for a clean sheet with Lasse Nielsen and Stefan Mitrovic behind Wolfberg’s Naldo. We foresee less chance of goals in the Gent/Wolfsberg match than the Roma/Real matchup.

We’ve picked a five man midfield with players who can pass the ball and score consistent points; we have two from Roma (Daniele de Rossi, Miralem Pjanic), Isco from Real Madrid, Renato Neto from KAA Gent and Julian Draxler from Wolfsberg.

Picking Christiano Ronaldo is always something of a risk given his gigantic price tag (almost 20% of the salary cap) but he always seems to come up with the goods; he’s lined up alongside Roma’s Edin Dzeko in a two man front line.
